Year 5

Welcome to Year 5's class page!

Here we will keep you updated with all of our amazing learning over the year. At the bottom of this page you will find documents and links that you may find useful to support your child's learning at home.

P.E. lessons

Our P.E. lessons will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Children are to come to school wearing their P.E. kits. Please ensure that your child has appropriate clothing and footwear for the weather. Our school P.E. kit consists of a white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps or trainers. Children are allowed to wear black jogging bottoms, a black jumper and trainers for outdoor P.E. lessons. Hair must be tied back and no jewellery should be worn on PE days.

Children are expected to:

  • Read at least 4 times per week - this should be recorded in their reading diary which needs to be brought into school daily. Children are able to choose books from their class library and eBooks are also available on the Oxford Ready Buddy and Oxford Owl websites. Children have logins for all of these.
  • Practise their year group spellings. These are no longer set weekly, children have their termly list to learn for the Spelling Bee competition.
  • Practise their times tables - using the Times Tables Rock Stars app they should complete sessions set weekly by their teacher (30 minutes a week).
  • We appreciate all of your support with homework. Please help your child to complete as much as possible to help them earn lots of points!

Breakfast and Tuck

Bagels and crumpets are provided first thing in the morning when your child arrives at school. These are free of charge and all children can help themselves to one.

Children can also order tuck for morning break. We offer:

  • Toast - 20p
  • Teacakes - 20p
  • Fruit - 20p
  • Raisins - 20p
  • Juice (forest fruits, orange or apple) - 50p
  • Tuck cannot be ordered if the child has no money with them.

Children are responsible for looking after their own belongings. Please make sure your child's name is clearly labelled on all of their belongings to avoid confusion. Thank you.

Jubilee Celebrations!

Spring D&T Week - Global foods

This week has been another D&T week, this time focusing on Global Foods.

We discussed the Eatwell Plate and different food groups before looking at foods and meals from around the world. We realised that the meals from all around the world link to the Eatwell Plate, even though they are made up of such different foods.

We have been able to make lots of different foods from all around the world.

We learned how to boil rice perfectly and enjoyed trying it. Later, we learned how to make guacamole and salsa and made our own, while Mrs Winfield fried us some peppers and onions to eat them with on a wrap.  Some of us had put too much lime juice in our guacamole!

On Wednesday we cut up and cooked vegetables to mix with noodles and made spring rolls - they were delicious and we were getting more adventurous with food tasting too!

On Thursday we made pretzels. It was great to watch the dough being made and we enjoyed trying to fold the pretzels too!

Working hard in Year 5!

Robotics Workshop

Today we had a robotics workshop with Mr Richardson and Miss Jeyes. We loved it! There were 8 different activities and we got to rotate around each of them.

We learned that a plan of a set of instructions for a robot is called an algorithm. We then programmed the robots with our algorithm and had to test them and then if there were any problems we had to debug (solve the problem).

We used several programmes including Lightbot and Sphero.

On Lightbot, we had to get the on screen robot to move around on a grid and around obstacles.

Using Sphero, we were able to control a variety of robots – we noticed that the program was quite a bit like Scratch so we understood it quickly. We enjoyed exploring what the robots were able to do including moving around, changing colour and making different sounds. We then had challenges to complete, moving the spheres to different numbered gates, making them turn and change colour. Some of us found it easier than others!

One of the other activities required us to move our robots through a slalom course – it looked like it would be quite easy but we found we had to debug and change the angles of the turn, the speed and the timings quite a lot in order to complete the challenge.

We had so much fun, learned lots, and can’t wait to do it again!

D&T - Pulleys & Gears

Christmas Jumper Day

Autumn D&T week

To start the year off, we had a D&T immersion week. Our task was to design and make a felt tablet or phone case. We had to create a design criteria, measure our phone or tablet to make sure it was the correct size, create a template, practise a variety of stitches and then cut and sew the felt to make our cases. We all LOVED the week and can't wait to take our end products home with us! Have a look at what we got up to...
